Viva the Night golf and CDR Combo
COOL THING #1: The success of our Burlington VT event came down to several cool elements. First, Mini’s sponsorship was awesome. They helped us make the Tee box area look really great. The one crazy Vermont thing that happened was on Friday and Saturday night the car bubble began to fog uncontrollably. As southern Californians we aren’t very familiar with moisture, much less the concept of dew or fog. At one point on Saturday night a cloud of fog rolled in. It was actually pretty awesome. Bravo Vermont for giving me a new experience.
COOL THING #2: Then one unexpected result came from the event. We nearly booked out three nights of night golf. How crazy cool is that. This is the first event where we truly featured night golf and players came out in droves, many clad in neon glow. As a result players were out until about 2am every night. But if you are a head pro reading this and thinking ‘oh man, I have to stay up until 2pm”, don’t worry. We figured out a method to put the course out with one cart and take it down with one. So the last players are being shadowed by a cart that is ‘disappearing’ the course as they finish a hole. It was super efficient and something we are going to do as much as possible because it was very well received.
COOL THING #3: The Mini Car bubble Competition: This was a success because unlike other events where players came to a central bay, we came to the players. So as you are playing and hitting shots with your buddies, we’d come up and offer your team the challenge. One shot to hit the car bubble and you get your chance to hit a legit hole in one for $5,000. Through the three nights over 11 players got a chance at a hole in one. It was a blast. ALMOST THE COOLEST PART: Saturday night, we shut down the course at around 11:30, but let everyone at the event come out onto the course to walk around the giant targets. We do it all the time, and it’s still impressive. I think we have a tradition on our hands. I can’t wait for gen2 course with targets and branding. It will be insane.
THE VERY COOLEST PART: The secret climax event of the weekend came on Friday night around midnight. We’d shut down the Cosmic driving range. The crew was busy shutting down the lights and tightening up the tee boxes for Saturday’s cosmic finale, when a shriek came out of the darkness from the course. This was a yell of elation and victory. It turns out BJ Sordiff hit what may be the first ever Night golf hole in one! Yes, that is right. He hit a hole in one at night on a 130 yard hole with a 9 iron. How insane is that. We thought he was just sticking his friend for a big bet and going a bit overboard, but it was the big Kahuna. Of course he was hitting the GlowV2, the only night golf ball that plays like your day ball. It’s the only ball we use at the Cosmic Driving Range.
Congrats to BJ, Brett Clace and the Links at Lang Farm for hosting us, and everyone who made the Cosmic Driving Range Burlington VT a success. See you all next year.
